In this Blog Perfume. Perfumes, Fragrances?, I will be researching exactly what I am questioning, what is, how, why, when, popular, and the costs, of the Perfume’s Manufacture and Distribution processes. I will also be contributing my Art Creations on this, Perfume Topic, also the most important information in this Blog, the Web Links, to All That Is Perfumes and Fragrances.
In Notes to Self–Sibella Court writes that scent is the key to capturing the spirit of a special time or place… In the article, Sibella continues to say, that each country smells so very unique and that each season, smells different. Regardless of those layers and varieties of scents, the combination remains within you, transporting you back instantly on smelling it all again. Sibella ends the paragraph, saying that scent is like a magic carpet, kind of travel, that transcends space and time, triggered by the power of our scent memory.
Perfume, Perfumes, Fragrances, we have so many questions in regard to this phenomena, in which the whole world is in support or accustomed too…, in place and in time.
What exactly is Perfume?–Perfume is a mixture of fragrant essential oils or aroma compounds, fixatives and solvents, used to give the human body, animals, food, objects, and living-spaces an agreeable scent. It is usually dispensed in a liquid form.
The History of Perfume, Perfume is a French Word– In Ancient texts and archaeological excavations, it shows the use of perfumes, in some of the earliest civilizations. Modern perfumery began in the late, 19th Century, using the commercial synthetise of aroma compounds, vanilla or coumarin, which allowed the composition of perfumes to fill with fragrances, that were previously unattainable, from Natural aromatics.
The word perfume is taken from the Latin, perfumare, meaning “to smoke through”. This art started in the Ancient Mesopotamia and in Egypt, and was refined by the Romans and the Arabs.

The worlds first recorded chemist, is a Woman named Tapputi, mentioned on a Cuneiform tablet, in the 2nd millennium BC in Mesopotamia. She distilled flowers, oil, and calamus, with other aromatics, then filtered and put them back in the distiller, several times.
In India, perfume, perfumery, existed in the Indus civilization (3300 BC – 1300 BC). One of the earliest distillations of Ittar, was mentioned in the Hindu Ayurvedic text, Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita.
In 2003, archaeologists uncovered the world’s oldest surviving Perfumes, in Pyrgos, Cyprus. The perfumes date back to more than 4,000 years. In ancient times people used herbs, spices, such as almond, coriander, myrtle, conifer resin and bergamot, as well as flowers… to make perfumes.

The following sketch is a drawing I did initially, in 2B Lead Pencil . I found this idea, after web searching for History Flowers used, in the manufacture of Perfume.
In the 9th Century, the Arab chemist, Al Kindi, wrote the book of chemistry of Perfume, which contained, of more than a hundred recipes for, fragrant oils, salves, aromatic waters, and substitutes or the imitations of costly drugs.
The art of perfumery was known in the, Western Europe from 1221. Between the 16th, 17th Centuries, perfumes were used primarily by the wealthy to mask body odors, resulting from infrequent bathing.
By the 18th Century the Grasse region of France, Sicily, and Calabria (in Italy) were growing aromatic plants, to provide the growing perfume industry with the raw materials. Today, Italy and France are the centre of European, Perfume Design and Trade.
Modern Perfumes– Since 1945, due to the great advances in technology of perfume creation, (compound design and synthesis) as well as the natural development of styles and tastes, new categories have emerged, to describe the modern scents.
- Bright Floral— combining traditional, Single floral and Floral Bouquet categories. ( The Estee Lauder’s, Beautiful )
- Green– a lighter, modern interpretation – cut grass, crushed green leaf and cucumber – like scents. Estee Lauder’s Aliage.
- Aquatic, Oceanic, or Ozonic, — the newest category in perfume history. First appearing in 1988, Davidoff – Coolwater (1988), Christian Dior’s – Dune (1991) and many others…
- Citrus— an old fragrance family, consisting mainly of “freshening” Eau de colognes, due to the low tenacity of citrus scents. A good example, Faberge Brut.
- Fruity— featuring the aromas of fruits and other than citrus, such as peach, cassis ( Black currant ), mango, passion fruit and others, too. An example would be, Ginestet Botrytis.
- Gourmand– scents with “edible” or “desert” like qualities. Contain notes – like vanilla, tonka bean and coumarin, as well as synthetic components to resemble food flavours. An example – Thiery Mugler’s – Angel.
Cost Price of the Perfume, Perfumes, Fragrances?– It all depends on the extraction method. More expensive, but not always. Prices are determined by labour and difficulty, of properly extracting each unit, of the natural materials, as well as the quality of the basic materials used, in the manufacture process. Usually the relationship between, longevity of a perfume, and the costing is, in the concentration of the essential oils in the end product. This is the major, determining factor of the Fragrance’s, High Sale Prices…

In Conclusion it is easy to see that Perfumes and Fragrances, not only had a place, and time in the World’s History. In the Modern World, Perfumes and Fragrances have a great appeal for people in our Modern society. There are Perfumes and Fragrances for all types of occasions and needs for each individual, and that the Perfume’s and Fragrance’s, are also in the affordable ranges, for all the consumers in the Modern world, cultures and society generally.
