Christmas is a modern English word, which evolved from an old English word, ‘Christes Masse’, meaning the Mass of Christ.  The main history of Christmas dates back 4,000 years, in which different Customs and Traditions, associated with the festival of Christmas were all observed, long before the Birth of Jesus. Historians say that Christmas Celebrations began as early as in 336 AD, in Rome.  The Bishop of Rome, Julius 1, chose the 25 December as Christmas.  From this declaration, around the world, Christianity observed this date.   Many of the worlds Traditions, and Customs, can trace their history by the ancient festivals, celebrated by Early Civilisations. It was these customs, that paved the way, for our Modern Christmas.

  1. Mesopotamian: New Year– Mesopotamians believed in many gods, mainly in Marduk, in which 12 days were celebrated in a festival called Zagmuk. Historians indicate that the 12–day celebration, of Christmas started from This…
  2. Europeans: Winter Solstice– In the pagan times, Early Europeans,  believed in the evil spirits, witches, ghosts and trolls. During this time, the people performed special rituals, celebrations, in the hope that the sun was coming back, very soon.
  3. Scandinavia: Yuletide– The sun disappeared for many days. After 35 days of long sunless days, when the first ray of sun was sighted, a great festival was held, called Yuletide. This special celebration, was included, together with their Christmas Celebrations.
  4. Roman: Saturnalia– Began to be celebrated in the middle of December, and concluded on 1 January. This celebration, included, Masquerades on streets, Big Celebration meals,  Visiting friends, and Exchange of Good luck gifts. The History Of:–

  1. The Christmas Card– This custom of sending the Christmas Card, was started in the UK in 1843, By Sir Henry Cole. He was a Senior Civil Servant. Who set up the  ‘Public Record Office’  (Called the Post–office), he wondered how it could be used by the general public?… Sir Henry had the idea for Christmas Cards, with his friend John Horsley, who was an artist. The first postal service that was used by the general public was opened in 1840.  As the printer— printing mode greatly improved, Christmas Cards became more and more popular and started to be produced in larger numbers… By the 1900’s, this custom had spread over all Europe, and was most highly popular in Germany. The Christmas cards, came to the USA, in the late 1840’s. In the 1900’s and 1920’s, the Home made version of Christmas cards was very popular.
  2. The Christmas Carols– The word Carol is a medieval word of French and Anglo Norman origin, believed to mean a dance song or a circle dance accompanied by singing. Carols express religious joy, and are associated with the Christmas season. The first carol was written around the 1350–1550, which was the golden age for the English carols, which followed the verse–refrain pattern. By the 16th Century, the popularity of carols, slowed, and almost disappeared. The Carols, revival took off in the middle of the 18th Century. Most of the Carols we know today, were written during the middle, of the 18th Century.
  3. The Christmas Tree– Is a part of our Christmas Celebrations, around the world. Pagan Origins–its clear that non–Christian Cultures bought evergreen plants indoors at the time of the Winter Solstice.  Christian Beginnings–date back to the 1500’s. Some say, it all originated in Germany in the mid–1500’s, others say in Latavia in the early 1500’s. Some believe the legend of St. Boniface, created the Christmas Tree, in the 7th Century.
  4. Today’s Christmas Trees– Come in many forms… Natural and Artificial, undecorated, decorated with candles, lights, ornaments and treats, coloured, fiber optic, and even upside down,  Christmas Trees!  Controversy– The Christmas Tree is not without controversy, condemned as a pagan symbol, and renamed a ‘ Holiday Tree’ , and removed from public spaces, due to political correctness, and also blasted by the Environmentalists!
  5. Christmas Decorations– The tradition of ornamenting the Christmas Tree and Homes during Christmas arose from the Roman and Christian Cultures. Early Christians believed that flowers of certain trees Bloomed irrationally on Christmas Eve as a Spiritual Homage to Jesus’ Birth.  The types of decorations have changed over the years. Today evergreens are used to adorn (Trees), where as previously, Handcrafted and Edible items were used to decorate the Christmas Trees. Today Ornaments bought from the major stores, are used to decorate, the trees in our modern society. The chain and electric lights are used to decorate the branches and trees.  Although the main reason for The Christmas Festival, is still the Congregation of Family Members, at one time and  place.  The Exchanging of gifts, and Love are still the Centre of Ideas for A Majestic Christmas Time and Honoured Traditions.

Christmas In Australia– Many aspects of the Christmas Celebrations originated from the Winter Celebrations in Europe. However, in Australia we are influenced by the Australian Climate and Wild life.  Christmas is a Public Holiday. People usually spend it with Family Members and Friends. Many people celebrate this event away from home, in holiday parks, on camp sites or at relatives’ homes. In the lead up to Christmas, people, decorate their homes with Christmas Decorations. These are usually Glass baubles or Wooden ornaments with images of Australian, Wild life and Wild flowers.

On Christmas day the children hope to receive gifts or a stocking filled with goodies under the Christmas Tree, from the mythical Figure Santa Claus. In the weeks before Christmas, the children write letters, to Santa Claus, so he knows what they want to receive as gifts, on Christmas Day.

Many people eat a special meal on Christmas Day. Traditionally, the main meal, was similar to the Christmas meals served in Europe.  In modern Australia, people, hold a barbecue at the beach or a picnic in a park. Or prepare a meal of cold meats, and seafood, followed by Pavlova, — a soft meringue cake topped with whipped cream and fresh fruit.
