The History Of:–

  1. The Christmas Card– This custom of sending the Christmas Card, was started in the UK in 1843, By Sir Henry Cole. He was a Senior Civil Servant. Who set up the  ‘Public Record Office’  (Called the Post–office), he wondered how it could be used by the general public?… Sir Henry had the idea for Christmas Cards, with his friend John Horsley, who was an artist. The first postal service that was used by the general public was opened in 1840.  As the printer— printing mode greatly improved, Christmas Cards became more and more popular and started to be produced in larger numbers… By the 1900’s, this custom had spread over all Europe, and was most highly popular in Germany. The Christmas cards, came to the USA, in the late 1840’s. In the 1900’s and 1920’s, the Home made version of Christmas cards was very popular.
  2. The Christmas Carols– The word Carol is a medieval word of French and Anglo Norman origin, believed to mean a dance song or a circle dance accompanied by singing. Carols express religious joy, and are associated with the Christmas season. The first carol was written around the 1350–1550, which was the golden age for the English carols, which followed the verse–refrain pattern. By the 16th Century, the popularity of carols, slowed, and almost disappeared. The Carols, revival took off in the middle of the 18th Century. Most of the Carols we know today, were written during the middle, of the 18th Century.
  3. The Christmas Tree– Is a part of our Christmas Celebrations, around the world. Pagan Origins–its clear that non–Christian Cultures bought evergreen plants indoors at the time of the Winter Solstice.  Christian Beginnings–date back to the 1500’s. Some say, it all originated in Germany in the mid–1500’s, others say in Latavia in the early 1500’s. Some believe the legend of St. Boniface, created the Christmas Tree, in the 7th Century.
  4. Today’s Christmas Trees– Come in many forms… Natural and Artificial, undecorated, decorated with candles, lights, ornaments and treats, coloured, fiber optic, and even upside down,  Christmas Trees!  Controversy– The Christmas Tree is not without controversy, condemned as a pagan symbol, and renamed a ‘ Holiday Tree’ , and removed from public spaces, due to political correctness, and also blasted by the Environmentalists!
  5. Christmas Decorations– The tradition of ornamenting the Christmas Tree and Homes during Christmas arose from the Roman and Christian Cultures. Early Christians believed that flowers of certain trees Bloomed irrationally on Christmas Eve as a Spiritual Homage to Jesus’ Birth.  The types of decorations have changed over the years. Today evergreens are used to adorn (Trees), where as previously, Handcrafted and Edible items were used to decorate the Christmas Trees. Today Ornaments bought from the major stores, are used to decorate, the trees in our modern society. The chain and electric lights are used to decorate the branches and trees.  Although the main reason for The Christmas Festival, is still the Congregation of Family Members, at one time and  place.  The Exchanging of gifts, and Love are still the Centre of Ideas for A Majestic Christmas Time and Honoured Traditions.
